ECF80 valves
This may be a daft question but on the KEL84 can i replace the ECF80 valves with EEC83 or others or do i have to use the 80's.
Thanks Shaun |

Re: ECF80 valves
Hi Shaun,
I assume you meant "ECC83" rather than "EEC83"? No, you can't substitute it. The second two letters indicate the individual elements within the valve. The "E" at the beginning, indicates 6.3V heater, I believe. "C" indicates a triode, "F" = small signal pentode So, for example ECC83 = 6.3V heater, double triode ECF80 = 6.3V heater triode + small signal pentode EL84 = 6.3V heater, single power pentode EF86 = 6.3V heater, single small signal pentode etc, etc Different manufacturers use different coding schemes, though, so there may be other equivalents to ECF80 - try googling "valve/tube equivalents" Nigel.

Re: ECF80 valves
heres duncan's site, good for equivalents,
http://www.duncanamps.com/index.htm just to be clear you can only use a ECF80 or equivalent in the Kel84, it uses the triode and the pentode as part of the circuit,

Re: ECF80 valves
Whoops .. no, my reply wasn't very clear, was it? Thank you, David
Sorry, a simple "NO" would probably have sufficed. Excuse me, I was bored

Re: ECF80 valves
Hi,
I use the E80CF in my WAD 6550. These are electrically the same as the ECF80, but are a much higher quality, with gold-plated pins. The electrical tolerances they run at are more closely matched too, I believe. Neil.

Re: ECF80 valves
Does it mean that the designer had an option of using a pair of small single triodes along with a pair of small single pentodes* in the design instead of using a small tube comprising both a triode and a pentode?
My question is then: Is it possible that the quality of signal handling is affected in a small tube enclosure where a triode throngs with a pentode as compared to splitted design with four small tubes instead of two? *Is the pentode part in ECF80 coupled in a triode or a pentode manner? Re: ECF80 valves
Hi Dimitri
The pentode section is used as a pentode to provide the voltage gain necessary. Jerry |
