Default Channel imbalance on FM BBC radio 3

One for the panel……….

Is it just me?
I’ve noticed a channel imbalance (left channel slightly lower) listening to FM radio but only on BBC radio 3, other stations sound fine.

I’ve tried 6 different quality tuners, same issue on all of them, swapping cables, Pre amps etc make no difference, switching to mono on my Beomaster 5000 brings the sound back into centre focus. I’m beginning to think that the problem may be at the broadcast end, alternatively, if my roof aerial has moved slightly, could that be the issue?

Yours sincerely

Distressed from Wiltshire

Must be somewhere at source, it will not be your Antenor. Bob

Well,

John and I scoped one of my tuners today, all clear. I shall monitor the sound for the next couple of days then an email to BBC engineering department if nothing improves.

That's good Nigel Maybe it was your local transmitter or programme source playing up. I had a listen when you first posted but it was orchestral so a bit left and right but sounded fine. Mono centred perfectly as you found. I had another listen last night on some more varied programme, organ, strings, then modern music, and an interview and to be honest I’d forgotten how good the broadcast quality can be. Must keep a regular ear out!

We’re on Sutton Coldfield 90.5 up here so probably different down your way. There can be some strange things with FM though. I’ve re-capped several Quad tuners and had no problem but one FM4 had a low level whistle which wasn’t the one mentioned in the service notes. After chatting to John I eventually sent it back to Quad who couldn’t hear it at all! So perhaps a local problem, but my other 2 FM4s didn’t do it at home. So they kept it a couple of weeks for listening tests but in the end swapped out the regulator and returned it in hope, and lo and behold it was perfect, so a noisy reg or a local problem that had ceased I suppose.
