Power conditioner poll
How many of us use some kind of power conditoner a la Chord/Isotek/Shunyata and so on? And what do you think, exactly what are problems whichs conditioners cure?
How many of us thinks that it is just ****, and if you do so, why is it so? |

Re: Power conditioner poll
I have used several, at the mo an RS lump, heavy bugger it is too.
I don't really need to condition my mains as we have no local industry that I'm aware of to dirty the mains. But the one thing I have noticed, any extra transformers in the room just adds to the mechanical hum. Why can't they make transformers that don't hum! Is it just a cost cutting exercise? Ok, so you may ask why I am using one at all. Well my mains Trans for the PX4's hum badly, so I though if I dropped the mains voltage slightly it may help. It didn't and doesn't. I would like to find some mains trans that don't have mechanical hum. This is a real issue that's hard to fix. Even all my oil filled trans hum, in fact they are the worst !!! Total P*&^ed off with this issue. I've even thought of using trans with double the output voltage and sticking 115V into the primary to get this sorted. Could then have the dropping transformer in another room so I didn't have to listen to it !!! |

Re: Power conditioner poll
Infact the only transformer I have that doesn't hum is 57Kg and 4.2Kv !!!!
It's that big it's on wheels The first time I switched it on I was sure it wasn't working as it didn't make a sound.....wrong.....it works fine !!!! Just wish it was nearer 1-1.5Kv though, that would be nice OK rant over, what was this thread about again... |

Re: Power conditioner poll
The 212, it also has a 3Kv tap and I was thinking of half wave rectifiing it.
Never tried half wave, will it work? Spose I could stick 3 or 4.2Kv though the 212, they can take it, I have the rated caps, chokes etc......Fun, fun....ouch..!!!! |

Re: Power conditioner poll
Can you let me know when you're going to try this? My son's at uni in Aberystwyth and I worry that he may be a little too close for safety.

You scared..... The highest I have tried was on the 212's @ 1,600V. Spose I could put a step down trans on the beast to feed it 110V ac and use the 3KV tap. It would at least be silent !! Actually the intention in the long run is to make a totally adj HT supply controlled with a variac. I have all the adj heater supplies I could ever need in the form of bench supplies up to 20A. I have so many valves to try and not enough time. So I need something like this to stand a chance. I can't even remember what valves I have. Must be over 3,000 by now and still counting. Got some more ECC83's again this morning........!!! |

Re: Power conditioner poll
I've just sold my Ben Duncan power conditioners - they are fantastic for solidstate but make valves sound worse.
