Hi Colin-i find these articles most interesting.
I bet if you costed up the parts to make one it would make the chinese amps look like absolute bargains !
who could fail to be seduced by the blue glow from those mercury rectifiers.

I am not sure how the 866's will like driving into that 13u cap, It doesn't matter how you draw it, its still not a choke input supply.

I don't know if 22ma is enought to drive the 845, I will have to check the numbers tonight.

Certainly looks nice though.

I know what you mean and bet it cost considerably more than the Chinese equivalents.

I must say I'm getting seduced by the Yarland 845 amp ( or perhaps it's the 845 sound with my ESL's) that I must have to chat to Paul about the amp this weekend. I'm sure this amp is being held back by the 'standard' Valve Art 845 tubes and would benefit from the 845B valves that are reputed to be far superior in sound. Then again there is the 'M' variant which is supposed to be the best sounding 845? I also think that the cheapo vol pot on the Yarland could benefit from being removed and use a single volume fed via a preamp. Then there is always replacing some (or all) of the signal caps with something better.
Ooer! I think I'm talking myself into getting one of these amps!!

The first thing I did with my Yarland (before I discovered the rectifiers were an accident waiting to happen) was to hurl the VERY nasty vol pot into the dustbin. I replaced it with an Alps Blue which was a huge boost to the sound quality.

Highly recommended mod.

I have never managed to overcome my addiction to the sound of this amp and still use it in my main system.

Now I happen to just have a spare alps blue lying around.

But as I use a stepped ladder attenuator based on swiss ELMA swich in my PREII and would be connecting the amp through the Pre, I was thinking of replacing the pot with a good quality fixed resistor eliminating the pot altogether.
