KAT88 & KEL84 odd issues
Guys, This might be a complete Numpty question
I seem to have stumbled on a really strange issue with my KAT88 and also my KEL84 while finding out that I had a left/right channel swap when playing some music. I disconnected one channel from the input of the power amp and noticed that I still had music coming from both speakers! I thought this is odd…. So I changed to the other channel with the other open the same! Still music from both speakers at about the same level too. So to take the pre amp out of the equasion I plugged an ipod into just one channel with the othe open, again output from both speakers this time the channel with no input seemed to have a lesser bandwidth. Did the swap to the other channel again the same. So the next thing I did was short out the input of the channel with no music, but still again output from both speakers a lesser bandwidth on the no input side. So I grabbed my KEL84 and was doing the same! Made me think what going on? |

Re: KAT88 & KEL84 odd issues
The only thing I can think of is you must have your speakers connected wrong, to find out remove any ONE speaker plug from the amp. if I am right, both speakers will stop working, this is because you may have the speakers and consequently, the amp. in series. BOB

Re: KAT88 & KEL84 odd issues
Thanks Bob I will try that, I guess this must be the internal wiring from the Output Transformers.
as on the binding posts there is just the one cable for each channel that goes to L/R speaker respectively. |

Re: KAT88 & KEL84 odd issues
Hi Bawdsey,
I think BOB is talking about your speaker cables, not internal in the amp. It is often cramped behind HiFi equipment and it would be possible to connect the cables wrongly(ie +ve of left and -ve of right going to one speaker). It will only take 2 seconds to check it. Phil.

Re: KAT88 & KEL84 odd issues
Ah Right Phil,
The cable is in a round casing with the two conductors blue and red so definitely not mixed up as cut just short enough to fit in one pair of binding posts. as the L and R posts are physically too far apart to get them crossed. |

Re: KAT88 & KEL84 odd issues
That sounds a possible, always check the easy stuff and never assume that something "must be" correct.
Usually the best plan is to think back to when you last changed something, even if some time ago. Have you had the speakers unplugged for any reason? Phil.
