Re: Metal cone drivers
I always thought paper drivers were preferable, but i have metal cones in a pair of Acoustic Energy speakers and i do quite like them. They don't seem to have a signature sound at all.
Never tried to DIY with any. My DIY speakers were deemed too big for a busy lounge, so i'm forced to compromise for the time being. I should think a good speaker can be designed around any type of cone. If you know what you are doing. |

Re: Metal cone drivers
Well I have tried the MarkAudio CHR70, Alpair7 and Alpair10 metal coned FR drivers and I much prefer these to any the Fostex eqivalent sized drivers. They are very good and Mark has put much new technology into his drivers. Highly recommended.

Re: Metal cone drivers
I normally use panel speakers. Apogee, Quad 57 & Martin Logan and really struggle with most box speakers as I can hear the coloration clearly and it annoys me sooner or later.
I have recently been using some Acoustic Energy AE2 that use metal drivers and I expected these to be hideous but they are very clear and without the typical chesty coloration I hear on voice. I can't determine if it is the metal drivers or the unusual cabinet lining material/none parallel sides but the Ally cones are doing a sterling job. |

Re: Metal cone drivers
I have used Bandor (www.bandor.com) aluminium coned speakers for a number of years now and am very happy with the sound. I can't detect any 'metallic' colouration, although they do (naturally) have a different sound to my IPL Transmission Line speakers. I have teamed the Bandor 50 mm with the 150mm base driver and cross-over is at 150hz.

Re: Metal cone drivers
Yep, Colin has built me some speakers using the Alpair 7 and they are superb, particularly in imaging IMHO. I also have a pair of Alpair 12's which I must get round to trying in my OB's.
