Default KEL 84 Wiring confusion.

Hi, this is my first post to this forum, although I have been reading it for a little time now.

I'm in the process of building my first valve amp, a KEL 84.

So far I've resolved the few problems I've met, but now I find myself confused by the types of wire supplied with the kit.

The instructions list :

6m Single screened wire for signal wiring.
2m Black 1/1.2 for EL 84 heaters
3m Black 1/.06 wire for ECF 80 heaters

In the kit I find three thicknesses of wire as follows:

Thick - Black Multistrand 3m
Medium - Black Single strand 1m
Thin - Black 2m with some kind of cotton inner.

No doubt it's pretty obvious to the "old hands", but I would appreciate some guidance as to which wire is which and whether the lengths provided are adequate to build the amplifier.

Would it be a problem to substitue different wires? - I suppose substituition of the heater wiring would not be a problem, but what about the signal wire?

I've really enjoyed building the amp so far and am eager to get it finnished, so I hope someone can help.

Cheers,

Mike

I'd get in touch with WD to get the required missing parts, you could use the medium single core in the heater supplies to keep you going at present but you need screened signal wire for the inputs.
Dont know if you've checked out previous post's regarding this amp,you can see the inside view of mine if you go to-World Designs Projects--Amplifiers--Complete Newbie Builds KEL84--Page 10. Click on the link on my post for a look, if you want.

The heater supplies are usually ( or was few years back when i first bought my amp) solid core black mains type cable. Thick stuff for the el84's and thin for the ecf80,s heaters. The signal wire is multi (or as i say was) stranded rats tail hook up wire with a sheilded braid.

I hope this helps. It may be worth contacting wd just to check. Getting the heater wires wrong wouldn't be good.

The signal wire if still the same is easily bettered. By what however is your taste. At one time i had each input wired with a different wire back to the switch until i decided what i liked the best. Which for me ended being solid core silver in clear tubing in twisted pairs. The reason being that it is really easy to work with, as for the sound, it made a slight difference, i think!!

Hi Mike,
This is an error as I have the same problem in a KEL 84 kit I am building for someone.
Phone WD and they will resolve it. You use the thick black wire for the EL84 heaters and the thin black wire for everything else.
