Default How choose phonoII int. wiring fror optimum capacitance/resist.

Hi all,

here's a tech question..
After having heaily modded my PhonoII (all the posts have been really useful! and photos will follow soon ) and being really quite satisfied with it I still would like to experiment a last change..

I would change the internal braided wire that comes from the arm cable input connectors to the pre-phono PCB (the grey braided ones) with something more "audiophile" (though the term could be quite confusing and, above all, useless costly!!!) and more appropriate to my cartr.

Before making blind changes I would like to choose something that could, theorically, best fit with my cartridge in terms of capcitance and resistance, so I guess if somebody would be so kind as to explain me (in a math way would be best!) which is the rationale on how to couple at best the input cable resistance/impedance of a pre-phono with the cartridge characteristics (i.e. load impedance).

I would like to know more about it as I saw a good number of different braided cables (copper, silver and so on..) with different loads and capacitance and so I asked myself how I was supposed to use those data in order to choose the one that could (theorically!) best fit for me.

I saw some last posts about adapting the tx load to the MC cartr. in order to get the best results.. I guess if something similar could be done with the first interface between the (very low) signal coming from the cartridge/arm/armcable group and the pre-phono itself.

Thank you,
Luca

Hi Luca
This is probably not a really useful answer, but it occurs to me that you should consider all the wiring (ie inside the arm and from the arm to the phono-II), how long it is, etc. And even maybe any connectors. It will all contribute to the resistance and capacitance, the short length inside phono-II will be less significant on its own.

Hi Luca,

Mooving on from what Max has said and provided you have considered what he has suggested, short lengths within Phono II are not going to make that much difference. Certainly, the original grey stuff is not good. I have had good results with simply a twisted pair of 0.7mm PTFE insulated ,silver plated solid core, or something more like the same, but stranded SP wire, PTFE insulated within a silver plated shield wrapped in a PTFE cover. IPL Acoustic IC2 being an example but I know this is no longer available. I wouldn't get too hung up on it. Experiment and see what your ears tell you.

Best wishes,

Greg
