Fakedeck DD? - World-Designs-Forum

I'm toying with the idea of making a direct drive version of Fakedeck by pinching the motor and electronics out of something cheap but adequate and mounting it on a suitable lump of slate.

My first thought was to get one of those horrid looking but very powerful Vestax DJ devices (just missed two with broken feet on Ebay for £15. Damn.) but wondered if anyone else had any suggestions?

I've just bought a JVC L-A55 for 6 quid on ebay, thought I might try a similar thing to you but not with slate

I fancy having a go at something like this as well. Plenty of cheapish DD's around s/h which could possibly yield a motor unit but how can I tell the good from the bad? Any recommendations as to which tt's to avoid?

I've been trying to work that out myself. I've been looking at some of the DJ decks such as like Vetsax, Citronics etc because they have very powerful motors. I can remember some of the cheap DD turntables in the 70s and 80s that you could stop with your little finger, and probably had cheap and cheerful bearings. Most of the Trio/Kenwood and Technics decks seem to be good, but that's reflected in the price they fetch. The ideal would be a Technics 1200 with a duff arm or plinth, but they're few and far between, I'm afraid. Just keep searching ebay...

So the £20.00 Fisher DD tt I've seen locally is unlikely to cut it then.

Picked up a Kenwood DD. Nothing much to look at. Decided to do a side by side comparison with my Lenco. Used the same unipivot 12'' arm with Goldring 1042 cartridge. Just swapped decks over. The Kenwood blows the Lenco away

The sound is so much clearer and tighter. I can honestly say I've never heard my vinyl sounding so good. Spun a few poorly recorded/pressed records and even they sound better. The original plan was to re-plinth the motor unit but now I've got a taste I might start looking at just getting one of the more expensive and presumably better Kenwoods.

I still cannot get over this sound. Just had to tell someone

Which Kenwood DD? Mine is the KD-770D, with a chipboard plinth. Your positive experience might just spur me into action to get a decent arm onto it and find out if it's any good.

It's a KD-2077. I have no idea as to how it ranks in the hierachy of Kenwood tt's but I don't care, it does it for me. I will probably strip it down at some point to see what makes it tick as I'm wondering now whether there's more potential by re-plinthing it.

It's a real shame about the Lenco as I really love it's solid build but I have a feeling that my collection of Lenco's is about to go up for sale.

If you are not too keen about dismantling/carving up your Kenwood, you could try an off-board arm to see if you like the sound.
