New or secondhand?

Do you want a bit of diy, ie fitting an arm, or do you want it all up and running pretty much out of the box?

the best choice I can think of is the Technics 1200 or 1210, works extremely well out of the box with a budget cartridge and would give the opportunity to upgrade the arm and cartridge at a later stage

I'll second that. A couple I know wanted a decent hifi but knew little about set-up. They plumped for a Technics and it has so far been absolutely hassle free.

This was brand new though. A secondhand one might have lead a hard life!

To fit your price point new Pro-Ject RPM 5 Turntable with Ortofon 2M Red cartridge.

Stylish, readily available, excellent sound.

P3-24+rb301+at95.
I am not any great planar/RB-lover, but TBH; their newest model, with that AudioTecnica AT95 is really outstanding value for the money. IMHO.

...and Thorens are a great bargain on eBay if you fancy the separate deck/arm route... I recently bought a lovely TD160 Super and Formula 4..

For something out of the box I would agree on either a Project Deck or a Technics SL1200 series.

Project decks are great as you can get a bundle package with phono stage, decent Ortofon cartridge that will play almost out of the box.

However the Technics have been selling for years with little or no change to the original design, they must be good and popular or a electronics giant like Panasonic would have ditched them a long time ago
