WD88VA-XL Headphone connection
Hi
have been running my WD88VA-XL now for some years; what a great amp and only getting better; particularly after upgrading my speakers with more sensitive drivers. Would like to connect a headphone to the amp; the headset is a Beyerdynamic DT990 at 600Ohm. Has anyone done this and how do I connect to the schematics? Thanks Ton |

Re: WD88VA-XL Headphone connection
Hi Ton,
There are a few of ways of doing this: 1) If you have a tape output connect it to a headphone amplifier and there you are. 2) Use a potential divider on the loudspeaker outputs of the amplifier, but of course the speakers will still be active. The simplest way to do this is get a potentiometer of about 200-250 R and wire it across the LS terminals with the wiper and earthy terminals to the headphones. Then with the amp set to a reasonable speaker listening level, adjust the pot for a sensible headphone listening level. Dismantle and measure the upper and lower sections of the potr and replace with fixed resistors of about 3Watt rating. 3) Buy a headphone box from any one of the suppliers. John |

Hi,
Didn't DTB do this with his WD88? I'm sure it's in a thread somewhere.....

I fed a separate Headphone amp via the tape out loop but as the WD88 used WD's input selecting relay assembly needed the amp on when using headphones to provide the heater supply that powered the relay board.... still with me?! So, what I did was make up an external a low current 6.3V external supply and fit a little 2 pole switch so I could toggle between internal and external supplys so i could use the headphone amp without the WD88 being on but still use the i/p relay switching facility. Worked a treat. DTB

Re: WD88VA-XL Headphone connection
Yes thats the way to do it, but I think I would use a seperate supply all the time for the relay panel and select mute to switch it off. You could even use the unused half of the selector switch to control an LED so you know when the panel is on.
