Am using one of these as my phono stage on MM at the moment cause I dont have the cash for anything with valves in at the moment. It sounds good, but would probably benefit from a decent PCB and a bit of thought into the guarding around the op amp input pins.....

Yes,I believe it was Dominic Baker who also helped design the KLS2's,KLS8's and the early KLS3's and others before going to St.Etienne to continue his speaker design education.

PS I voted SS.

I'm ambidextrous - so with valves on one hand and transistors on the other I'm bound to be happy!

Seriously - a decent solid state RIAA preamp might be fun - especially if it had all sorts of upgrade paths. But it would have to be better than the JLH one (which IMHO makes the game harder).

I'm happy with my Valve Phono stage, But before that I was very pleased to use a Rega Fono MC. Inexpensive and quite a big bang for the buck. I can't see how a kit of parts would be that much cheaper than most of the halfway decent S/S phono stages.
Just my thoughts. It makes a lot more sense to make one's own Valve stage on a performance/cost basis than a solid state one. Ready to be shot down in flames now............................................... .................................
