Default Is plywood better than particle board?

We are aware of Peter's acoustic preference for particle (chip) board for speaker cabinet construction. Planet 10 who is obviously a speaker educated person has recently suggested that good plywood would be his overall preference. I'd be interested in anyone elses take on this. In particular, Peter, what do you think of quality ply versus particle board?

I started building speakers with particle board. Certainly better soincally than MDF but it does not fit with my style/rational of designing boxes.

A lot of the classics were made with particle board (and i have burned many hundreds of those boxes -- including the carcasses of a set of IMF TLS80s)

Besides not having the sonic finese of a well designed plywood (i am not considering crappy ply here), particle board does not have near the longevity of plywood.

in his latest newsletter Peter discusses particleboard and has in the past on the forum come down in favour of it over ply,
so personally I would go along with his views, he has a very good track record with speakers

How does someone get a hold of the newsletter, i'd love to read his arguments... my biggest problem with particle board is that it is hard to work with and lacks structural integrity, so tends to fall apart.

Give me chipboard over MDF any day of the week. The fact that's it's also cheaper is nice. But I'd still take ply over it, accepting that we can never entirely erradicate panel resonance in a reasonably sized cabinet; only control it.

You can read more about my thoughts on the subject here

www.speaker-parts.eu/info/

which is an ongoing rant (bit like this forum really!).

I'll be updating this every other day or so.

Very informative and "un" rant like. It's good to get an experienced perspective on the hows and whys of an established designer like yourself.

A good read in an age of ill informed blogging. Looking forward to your next rant Peter....
