Hi everyone
I don't know that much so l thought l ask can a kit or kat 6550 not just use a ecf82 but work well What does everyone think (and the other ones ecf804 6gh8a ecf 8070 adapter or rewiring req in some cases ) Best wishes To all I haven't been a poster but have read many others Thanks to all who have I learnt alot My kit6550 uses telefunken E80CF with tung sols usa and svet 5u4g Nick lucks hifi World upgrades blackgates and mundorf + John's repairs and modifications (over the years) The telefunken give it a very clear and neutral sound which comes from my oppo 205 Sorry lam going on a bit that's hifi for you Frank |

Re: can kit or kat 6550 use ecf82
Hi Frank,
have a quick google such as, "ECF80 vs ECF82" here's the first reply, https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...d.php?t=145802 I would say, if you compare the data sheets and the pinout is the same and the voltages/currents won't be exceeded, and, if you already have some, then give them a listen, but, bear in mind that the design was done with ECF80 and even NOS Mullards cost very little and will last for many years so probably there's little to be gained. |

Quote:
I have a quote from "Andy Grove" from the KECL82 description in mind. Where he explains that they chose to use the ECL82 valve for that kit, and says: "There is a slightly more powerful version, the ECL86, but these aren't so easily available, and I think the only ones around are either N.O.S. (New Old Stock) or from obscure and possibly suspect sources." I realise that you are asking about a different WAD amp, and a different valve, but I suspect that their policy would have been the same at the time. I don't know of any current manufacturers of ECF82 valves. Hope this helps. Graeme |

Re: can kit or kat 6550 use ecf82
Thanks very much graeme
l am interested in hearing others points of view the more the merrier I.e lve heard that both ecf80 and ecf82 to be used in the dynaco by various parties with adapter for the 7199 I seen kits ecf80 and ecf82 for it there's triode ones as well makes me scratch my head When l was squatting l would do home rewiring but with valves don't mess with it unless you know what you are doing even if comes a cross as a dud question Keep them coming I trust this forum Best wishes Frank |

Re: can kit or kat 6550 use ecf82
If you have two ECF82's just plug them in and see, it will either work or not. Bob

Re: can kit or kat 6550 use ecf82
Yes easy valve availability was certainly mentioned in the articles. At the end of the day the first stage needed medium gain and the second needed a splitter/driver. A valve containing both sections was an elegant solution and there was, and still are, lots of NOS ECF80 available as it was a popular TV (and radio) valve. TV’s stopped using them at the end of the 60’s but even 60 years later we can still pick up NOS Mullard for £20 or so on eBay.
A very quick search on eBay UK shows, ECF80 - 411 Mullard ECF80 - 45 ECF82 - 176 Mullard ECF82 - 8 As to using something other than ECF80 check the data sheet for any obvious reasons not to then give it a listen. The design was for ECF80 though so don’t be surprised if it sounds different as the operating points and final testing will have been done for ECF80. Something else will work no doubt but I’ve used different “equivalents” and they may do the job fine in some circuits but not in others, 5687 vs E182CC springs to mind. Let us know what you hear Frank. |

Re: can kit or kat 6550 use ecf82
What is the question? Power, frequency response, damping factor, distortion etc..
A VOX is a guitar amp and the Radford a high end hifi amp. Then there are various models of both. And please note the ECF82 is used differently than the ECF80/82 types in the Dynaco and kit6550. The Radford uses a long tail pair phase splitter (http://www.r-type.org/articles/art-097.htm) where the kit6550 uses a 'concertina' phase splitter I understand. I guess asking 4 people the question will get you 5 different answers... Alan |
