Diy Dac
Finished this a couple of months ago. It's built on an old WAD 6550 chassis. The designs are at:
http://members.chello.nl/~m.heijlige...tml/dactop.htm and a kit of the hard to get parts like the PCM, VCXO and the digital PCB are available from: http://www.tentlabs.com/Products/Com...DAC/index.html I had to design and etch my own double sided output board to fit the valves into the 6550 chassis but everything worked first time and it sounds fab. I had been using a Rega Jupiter but the external DAC is a definite improvement. Everything much clearer and the music rocks. I can recommend this to anyone although I have not been able to compare it to any other designs yet. I estimate it cost me about £400 including valves with the custom HT TX being the most expensive item with the Audio note caps and tant resistors coming in a close second. The components from Tent labs were very reasonable £160. |

Re: Diy Dac
thread mode? I'm a simple soul.
I lke the look of the huge chassis with only a couple of valves sticking out of it. does 'thread mode' tell us more? |

Re: Diy Dac
Hi Andrew,
Up on the right, a dropdown selection called Display Mode. Set it for "Switch to Threaded Mode" and you'll see more info. Don't ask me why! Cheers, Tony |

Re: Diy Dac
Thats a great effort, looks like you used the same Crystal reciever chip that I bought and then fried along with 4 of my 8 1542 DAC chips when I made a PSU polarity balls up!
I got as far as buying a new Crystal chip and designing a PCB as I free formed the last one on proto board. Looking at the pics might motivate me to do something with that rack mount box full of stuff I aquired for my dac.
