Default What phono pre?

Well, i just ordered my kel84
For now i will have to use the phono stage in my quad 44 pre amp, but i realise i will need something better.
I would like a kit if possible, but thats not essential.
I will be using MM carts as my funds dont stretch enough at the moment to start experementing with MC.
So, can anyone suggest anything?
Im going to ebay some things ive got lying about and use that money to fund the phono amp, so im guessing ill have up to £200 to spend.
If this isnt enough, what is the best from the sub £100 contenders?
If i cant afford anything good enough ill have to buy a cheap one to use while i save up more funds.
Thanx, Graeme.

Graeme,

I'm building up a 'Lite Audio' LS37 Valve MM/MC Phono Pre amp I bought off ebay in kit form. The PCBs were suppiled with the components already soldered in which suprised me!! All I need to do is house them. 6 Months so far, still no further, the weathers too good to stay indoors for me.

I've got a Bellari vp129 that I'm very happy with although I would change the valve it comes with. A Svetlana flying C was a huge improvement - initially I thought that it had too much bass and messy treble but the new valve tightened up the bass and cleaned the sound up wonderfully.

I only bought it because WAD stopped trading a week before I had planned to buy a phonoII (I was fed up with a phonobox and a dissapointing MingDa phono stage) and I wanted a cheaper stop gap until phonoII's were available again. Having said that it's doing a fine job so I'm in no hurry to replace it now. From memory it's not as good as a phonoII, but it's not far off and is a lot cheaper.

There's one on ebay now for £170 including delivery from the same people I got mine from.

looks interesting, works out to about £120 plus shipping.
Unless it comes with instructions though im not sure i'd know how to piece it all together.
I notice you can buy it complete for £190 too.
Does anyone have any listening experience of these?
I was also looking at the bottlehead kits, anyone heard them?

I had seen those bellari's too, i wasnt sure about them but its nice to hear your getting good results.
I like the headphone output too, my cd player has headphone out so that would negate the need for a headphone amp.

The Lite Audio thing sounds good to me. butI've only powered it up a couple of times though our workshop SS 'Eagle' Int amp and JBL speakers combo. We've got an old 1980's Yamaha TT too. I haven't taken it and used it on the system at home yet, that wil;l be the proper test, i know how that system sounds as a ref.

www.putfile.com/davethebass then click on 'Valve pre amp 1,2, and 3' if you haven't seen the Lite Audio kit before.

used to, quite a lot. But a few broken bones introduced me to 'the fear' and eventually i gave up.
Used to bmx too, about to put a couple on ebay to fund this pre
Used to ride the bmx track up the road from rom.
Lived that way till about 6 months ago.

My girlfriends little bro has recently been sponcered. He's piecing together a deck for me but how much ill use it these days is debatable.
