Re: stand alone phono stage
Hi Andrew et al,
To be reasonable, it needs to be central. I'd offer my place but Bristol would be a long way for everyone, and then you Northerners might not want to mix with 'soft southern sh*te' Somewhere in middle England would be good. Best wishes, Greg |

Re: stand alone phono stage
Thats what I said, Yorkshire, the middle of the island.
Anyway, maybe Greg could be a good location, may tempt a few from the Wales end of the family... Anyhow, I have just bought 12 E810F's so thats the start of the fun for this year :-)

Re: stand alone phono stage
I was going to start with TL's power supply, loads of chokes and caps, and if that doesn't cope with the **** mains I have, I was thinking of a SS regulator after the first choke, then two or three more chokes after it.

Re: stand alone phono stage
As an ancient Vinyl freak who has only just begun updating his Hi Fi system in the last year I have a silly question.
When did it become neccesary to have a phono stage and why ?. My ancient Quad system didnt have one (as a seperate that is ). Circa 1970's HI Fi systems didnt need them and we didnt even think we would need em, No one in any Magazine of the time was even talking about them. Just wondering |

Re: stand alone phono stage
Its always been necessary since the introduction of the microgroove LP AFAIK. Your Quad may have the stage inbuilt. HiFi systems around the 1970's had phono stages, they where inbuilt or integral to the amp. My mum has one! As vinyl declined during the late eighties and early nineties manufacturers removed phono stages from their amps. This allowed specialist external phono stages to flourish. Today some manufacturers are putting phono stages back into their kit but there is still a healthy market for a stand alone stage as, on the whole, they sound way better than an integral one

Re: stand alone phono stage
how abut a different design approach from the wad phonoII. I've read (not heard) that a phono stage with a first stage with muscle makes a difference. I know a 417a here would not be commercially viable(?), but how about something with some current? Or how about a cascode for the first stage?
