WD88 power switch

Hi all, new to this forum as I am considering a WD88 build. I have some space contraints at the rear of where this amp would sit and would consider relocating the power switch to the side of the unit near to the front.

anyone else done this or have any suggestions - I note from pictures that the 240v inlet is combined with an on/off switch so I assume I would have to bypass the switch provided (if possible).

Alternitavely, you could just leave the socket switch on permanently.

In my limited experience, removing the mains wiring from the switch at the front of the amp (where the input stages commonly sit) is a huge aid to hum reduction, so what you are suggesting would be a step backward.

I switch my power amp on & off at the wall. I suppose you could very heavily shield the mains wiring if you really wanted to move the switch to the front. I tried shielding it with de-soldering braid, but that gave nowhere near the same benefit as removal.

Hi Konig,

a couple of thoughts,

1) if you were to position an alternate power switch on the left side (viewed from the front) of the amp it would be on the opposite side to the signal wiring so unlikely to prove a problem with hum pick up as long as you mounted it towards the rear of the left side. If you want to do this then the switch fitted to the IEC inlet could simply be ignored (you normally have to link terminals to put the switch in circuit).

2) Just leaving the amp's switch in the on position and switching on/off at the wall socket or if necessary a switched distribution block would be much easier!


3) don't let a little challenge like this put you off building a brilliant amplifier!
