The kit looks OK Colin, at least you haven't got to solder in the SM parts, that would be a challenge. BOB

Hi Colin et al,
Nice scope.
Try to keep the TV H/V on the "OFF" position, as it is generally used for TV work.
Trigger generally on "AC", but use "HF" if signal noisy, and "LF" is signal has a lot of hum. These are not set in stone as you will soon find out.
Any questions stick them here and I/we will try to help out.

John

Hi John All
Thanks for the tip john
Complete novice here when it comes to this stuff
So next in line is the function gen to use with the 20 MHz scope does the function gen need to be 20 MHz as well or is it not an issue if using a minim of 2 MHz and above OK
just looking at options of a kit or a cheap used
gen of ebay

Hi Col,

We are looking at audio frequencies typically 10Hz to 20KHz but higher f are usual so we can see any problems higher up.

Signal generators are usually in 2 broad bands; LF (or Audio) typically 10Hz to 1MHz, and RF from there upwards.

So we want LF and they then come in 2 broad types; wien bridge oscillators and digital synthesized.

1) Wien bridge types are often just called oscillators or audio oscillators and usually offer sine and sw.

2) Digitally synthesized generators are often termed function generators and may offer other waveforms such as triangle and sawtooth.

Wien bridge type tend to have lower distortion and, being older, there are quite a lot around but condition varies.

For example, I've had and all are fine if you find a good one, Farnell LF1, LFM2, (from the 80s), and presently using Leader Lag120B (from the 90s). A Farnell DSG2 digitally synthesized generator was very nice and went down to fractions of a Hz but the distortion (if you later get a distortion meter to use) is worse than many oscillators.

Do a few web searches on those terms and models and it will fall into place. I'm sure others will be able to suggest modern ones which work well.
