Food for thought Guy!

Do I take it that for the last sentence you removed your tongue from your cheek? Have you used them?

Hi Adrian

Yup, They are in all my plugs.

To start with I bought just one and tried in the plug for the phono amp. It worked, so I bought half a dozen for everything.

While looking for their web site to hyperlink it, I discovered they now do Rhodium fuses. Oh dear.

The UK supplier is in Basingstoke, so I've just emailed them asking for prices.

Seems they also do slow blow internal fuses as well. Ideal for my WAD 300B PSEs, no doubt.

Should be fun trying them out!

Guy

These fuse threads never fail to amuse me.... I wonder if you would say it had "worked" if you hadn't previously read the sales blurb before using them? Ah well..... It's your hard-earned...

And it's your ears which are losing out!

Have you ever tried these fuses?

It's because my money is "hard earned" I won't waste it on stuff which doesn't work--ie. improve the sound.

Seems to me good quality fuse wire and end caps on the fuses is the same as good quality interconnect and 'speaker cable, and good quality phono and banana plugs.

It all helps.

Guy

Lend me a fuse and I'll try it, Guy - and you might then have a convert.

There are several huge and obvious differences between interconnects and speaker cables that carries signal and a cm of wire that conducts electricity from the mains to the power supply. (Consider for example) for a moment, the miles of copper wire that carries the current to your home, sometimes with all sorts of mush, spikes and dc on it and one cm of fuse is going to make a difference?!?

There you are, I've set myself up to eat my hat. I am sceptical until I can try one of these wonder fuses.

Then if I tried one a published Yes! or No! - would anyone be convinced? larks!

Hi Andrew

That's a deal!

I'm waiting for a reply back from the supplier about the new Rhodium ones they supply. If I buy a couple of them to try out I'll send you one or two of my current ones to have a play with.

The way I tested was as follows;
  • Take the plug from the socket, clean the pins well;

    Take the original fuse out and clean the fuse holder clips and the end caps on the fuse;

    Replace everything and listen;

    Put the new fuse in and listen.

Hopefully this will eliminate any benefit you may get simply from unplugging, replugging and changing the fuse.

My test was on the plug supplying the phono amp, which seemed to me to be the most sensitive bit of kit.

Your point about 1cm of wire compared to the miles coming from the power station is well made.

However, my system is powered from about 40ft of Kimber mains cable spurred from my consumer unit into gold plated wall sockets, then Russ Andrews mains cables to all the bits of kit. Perhaps this makes it more sensitive to small changes? I don't know.

Guy

This should be interesting.. Good luck Andrew in trying to perceive ANY difference whatsoever with those fuses. Mind you, make sure you fit them the right way round. They ARE directional aren't they?

I must be one of the few extremely lucky ones that has hearing so bad I don't need to spend any money on these ridiculous tweaks because I just can't hear a thing that they are meant to do. Suits me, sir!!

Just out of curiosity Guy, when you say it "worked", what exactly did it do, other than conduct electricity of course?

Hi Soulminer

Interesting to read you "don't need to spend any money on these ridiculous tweaks".

Totally with you on that one. I also never spend money on ridiculous tweaks!

I guess it's all about what you consider a good tweak, and what you consider a ridiculous tweak.

For example, you don't use twin bell wire for your 'speakers, presumably? And your interconnects aren't £5 ones from Maplin, are they?

Do use spikes under your 'speakers? Do you have your equipment on the floor or on a dedicated stand? If you've got WAD/WD kit, is it as supplied, or have you upgraded any components?

As to the improvement from the fuses. The easiest way to describe it is to say the music flowed more easily, with more air and space round the instruments.

Just in case it's of any interest, I've got a Roksan Xerxes20+; Artemiz mark 2 arm, specially rewired; Shiraz cartridge; WD Phono 3; WD Pre 3 and WAD 300B PSE monoblocks. These feed into WAD KLS 3 'speakers which Peter Comeau upgraded by fitting the SEAS Millenium tweeter and redesigning the crossover.

All amplification has been upgraded with PIOs, Black Gates, Shinkohs, Mills, silver phono sockets and silver internal signal wiring.

Valves have all been specially selected, and are TJ Full Music ECC82s and 83s, Western Electric 300Bs, Telefunken 6AU6s and National Audio 5U4Gs. These latter have been a wonderful find.

Everything is powered through Russ Andrews Mains cables, and all interconnects are Kimber silver cables. 'Speaker cables are Kimber copper/silver hybrids.

All equipment is supported on Torlyte or oak cone feet as appropriate.

The reason for boring you with this is simply to say my kit is fairly well fettled, as the saying goes. It may be, therefore, it is particularly sensitive to small changes.

Guy

So now I have to get serious! oh dear - not easy!

Guy, your list should also include giving the oringinal fuse a good scrubbing too!

Phono is a good choice I suppose. It is nothing if not sensitive. I have a completely rebuilt and hard wired (with silver wire) blackgates, kiwames, Hovlands WAD pre2 and PSU. 'spose that will have to do. Deck is a 301, 103 cartridge into WAD300BPP (best amplifier in the world;-) into ESS AMT speakers.
