Interesting bit of history. I lived in Swindon at the time and well remember the local sadness accompanying the closure of the large brick Garrard works.
For those interested, small correction to the linked article required; the 201 claimed as "pre-war" continued in production after the war. It did not have the same motor/transmission arrangement as later models as suggested. Instead, it had a large diameter (about 9"), direct drive, multi-pole motor synchronous with turntable speed, the rotational speed of which was controlled by a centrifugal governor. Important to keep oiling the felt pad on the governor shaft. Later production examples had a modified control system allowing them to cope with the new-fangled long playing records. Richard. |
