This attracted an incredible number of admiring glances at the show, not the least from wives and girlfriends.

Across the corridor was a Garrard in a multi-layer wooden plinth that cost considerably more than the Slatedeck but, in one visitor's terms, looked as though it was knocked up in a garage!

The twin looks great in the photos, I suspect it's even better in the "flesh".

Maybe there's something natural and robust about slate that gels visually with classic idlers.

It's worth mentioning that strange neat 1mm line around the arm mount is not just a go faster stripe, it is a completely seperate piece of slate cut to perfection, and it can be done again and again and again to the exact same measurement, or to any other.

Yeah, I love the natural slate look and I try and avoid work where ever possible.

Just about proves your point I reckon

I been reading 'loudspeaker' by ga briggs, very interesting and in very simple terms..
there is a table on typical density of materials which they say 'broadly speaking' is the best guide to low resonace (although bonding 2 panels improves things) and they show a few coparivive tests

the table reads plywood at .67, oak at .72, chipboard at .81, concrete and marble at 2.6 and slate at 2.9..
so apart from looking very good.... it's made of the right stuff..

OH Marble is up there with Slate. That is a surprise.

I left a marble fire back and hearth standing up against the wall and my property developer client came to clean one day and smashed the fire back. So we had to use a resin one from Screwfix instead. I'd better ask if I can have the hearth then, it's stood out in the yard at the moment.

Gilbert Briggs' table only refers to density, so marble is about the same weight as slate, size for size. He makes no mention of the structure. Marble is a very "solid" material, almost like glass, whereas slate is made up of layers, almost like plywood but on a much smaller scale. That makes it very non-resonant and good at absorbing vibration, and thus ideal for shoving a 401 on top.
