Default Tannoy repair

Hello all,
I have been offered a pair of Tannoy Cheviot speakers for free which is good, but they have rotting surround foam which is bad. I expect this has been asked before but can anyone recommend where to get them repaired and an approximate cost. I am reasonably good with my hands so would be willing to tackle it myself with appropriate instructions. I have e-mailed Lockwood audio who are an approved repairer but i am expecting them to be pretty expensive.
Finally, i have never heard a pair of Tannoys, can anyone give me some idea of how they sound and opinion of weather they are worth repairing.

Thanks in advance, Phil.

They sound awful Phil, you should give them to me and I will put up with the repairs which are hardly worth it anyway because they sound so 'orrible.

Send them to my house for proper disposal.

The HPD series drivers aren't as good as the Golds, but they're still excellent units, and well worth repairing. Their bad reputation is caused mainly because of those foam surrounds rotting. Refoam them, problem solved.

Had my Tannoy Balmorals re-coned by Lockwood audio a couple of years ago. http://www.lockwoodaudio.co.uk/ Have been very happy with them since.

Thanks for the info everyone, i think i will get them fixed up(assuming i do get them). Another question, would they be a good match for my KEL84 with regard to impedance curve and sensitivity?

Steve, can you remember roughly how much Lockwood charged?

Regards, Phil.

They should blow your eardrums out with about 5w. Power is not something big Tannoys need much of.

Chuck the Cheviot cabinets (good name) at some point in the future, and get them in a proper cabinet. Preferably of the horn persuasion. These drivers like volume. Bigger the better.

Hear here, I've heard what Tannoys can do and I'd love a pair of their 15inchers in horn cabinets.

They are rather big though!

They were quite expensive at @ £250 however they are the authorised Tannoy agents and they did assure me that the surrounds they used were the correct ones as supplied by Tannoy. I do know that many other loudspeaker repairers will not use the correct surround which can reduce the bass performance. It is possible to do it yourself for a fraction of the cost using surrounds from speakerbits (link in scotmoose post). This guy says he supplies genuine Tannoy surrounds and has a good reputation on the Tannoy forum.
