Audax PR240MO question?
Hey all,
I was wondering if someone here could answer some questions about the Audax PR240MO. I have been looking for a smallish high sensitivity woofer to be used in a BR cab. I've typically used a lot of JBL 15" (or similar) in high efficiency 2-way horn designs but never anything like the Audax. I came across the PR240MO searching for suitable woofers. While looking for more info. on the driver, several search results led me back here It appears that the driver was used in a couple of projects here in smaller vented and sealed cabs. I ran the driver through some basic Win ISD sims and as crazy as it sounds, it looks like a much larger BR cab would work well also. Has anyone had success running one of these driver in a large BR cab? Also, I would really like to run this driver up relatively high. Somewhere aound 1200-1600Hz or there abouts. I have read about anomalies that are present above 1000 Hz that were dealt with by using a notch filter. Most important priority for me would be high efficiency for low power tube amps. Sounding good would be right up there also Using Win ISD, the PR240MO looks pretty good in a 9 cu-ft cab tuned to 38Hz. Considering how some of you fellas have used this driver in the past, what the heck am I missing here??? Thanks, RC |

Re: Audax PR240MO question?
Oh PS.... I used them in a design and they are excellent in a larger cab.... I used infinite baffle on a 90 liter box but they could just as easily have been ported by about 6 inches of bog standard plastic waste pipe. Good deep tunefull Bass is what I got, with snap and attack and grumbles in the pit of my stomach. I wanted to go up to about 180liter but SWMBO nay said them..... So I scalled back and went for smaller cabs in a three way. I also ran as two ways on about 20 liters as mid/bass but it was **** just to test them out.......
At one point I tried the comparable size in the Audax Aerogel, but could not justify the cost associated with having a pair of perfectly good paper coners sitting doing nothing. So I stuck the papers back in and sold the Aerogel to my mate and he is still using them. If you buy NOS you may find that the surrounds fall to bits after about 10 years, but the new sourounds are about £20 the pair on the net...... Other than that, if your big box is a fail, you could always scale down to a smaller box...... Best of luck....

Re: Audax PR240MO question?
Actually, the original PR240MO that Audax discontinued is now available again. Thing is that I can’t locate any of the specs and parameters for the discontinued driver so I’m not sure if it’s exactly the same driver or changes have been made. All I have to go on are the new published specifications.
https://www.madisound.com/store/prod...oducts_id=9051 Looking at the frequency response graph, it appears that things may get a little wonky beyond 2K but I think that using a 4th order network crossing over around 1.2K should be steep enough to avoid any problems. Sounds like people have used a notch filter for the same reason. Big volume BR cabs that are narrow but tall are apparently prone to standing wave issues but I think that I can deal with that by using a internal angled panel at the top of the cabinet. I believe that would solve it anyway I’m usually only running 2A3 or 300B SET over here so we are only talking about a few watts. Thanks for the info. and sharing your experiences with the driver. It all helps I would upload a pic of what I am thinking design wise but they are all .png files from SketchUp and the site will only allow for .jpg or similar. I have no idea how to go about converting them to a site friendly format or if it's even possible. RC |

Son of a gun, I forgot about that! Thanks, Colin. Please forgive my weak attempt at SketchUp. I'm no expert by any means and just use it to give me a visual representation of whats going on in my melon . I haven't settled on a final design yet but this is more or less what I am going for. Not sure how I'm going to secure the horn that appears to magically floating in air yet. Here are the rest of them: http://s97.photobucket.com/albums/l2...0cab%20prelim/ |
